Carbon fiber is a fiber primarily composed of orientated carbon atoms.  A typical carbon fiber is produced in a fiber tow form consisting of numerous fiber filaments that can range from 5-10 micrometers in diameter.  Carbon fibers have multiple advantages as an engineered material:
